So this happened! ……
I know this is barely proof, as clearly I’m stood in front of some generic lockers, sheepishly taking a selfie. Ridiculous!
The good news is, I made it out of the changing rooms, in to the gym and used some equipment, hurray!
I felt brave!
I also felt a little bit like jelly. Some bits wobbled for 20 minutes on the treadmill and after about another 20 minutes doing free weights, lunges and abs, my legs and arms felt a bit wobbly.
But it’s all good and it’s a start. Now I just need to stick to it! No excuses!
Post babies, I wanted to focus on me and start to get my body back in shape! This has got nothing to do with how I look to others, it’s about how I want to look and feel. I know from my dancing days how fit and strong my body can be and I want to get that back again. My mission is to be fitter at 40 than I was at 30! (Oh my, 40, does that have to happen?)
Last year, when Lorne was about four months old I kick started my baby weight loss regime by signing up to a course of classes and by buying a fitness dvd I could do at home. I have rubbish will power and am not motivated if I don’t enjoy things, so I needed to find a type of exercise that I would find fun and a bit different!
So I found out about a pole fitness course and signed up to that! There was absolutely nothing sexual about this class and it’s a proper workout, way harder than it looks. We were shown how to do basic spins and lifts around the pole by a graceful, athletic teacher with abs of steel. After the demo of each move, we got to have a go and I quickly realised I had no upper body strength, I needed thicker thighs and my abs were totally none existent. Also it’s bloomin painful, you get bruises everywhere, but even so, it is rather addictive, a great workout and really good fun! (If you are local to me in North Gloucestershire, South Warwickshire, then look up Riverside Pole & Fitness)
After realising that nearly all of the Bramley Road Girls were doing T25 and getting results, a bit slow off the mark, I joined them! You might have heard of the Insanity workout. Well this is by the same guy, Shaun T, but T25 is a program of 25 minute workout sessions on a set of dvds.
The great thing is, no fitness equipment is required. With the baby happily set up in his jumperoo, I was able to fit in a full on 25 minute workout, that varies each day as you select the correct dvd based on the timetable of sessions that’s included.
It’s brilliant! It’s short, convenient, a good workout with simple exercises that can be modified for post baby beginners up to hardcore fitness fanatics. It takes you through a complete body workout, with a different routine daily.
I’ve always enjoyed yoga and Pilates classes. Post baby I was keen to rebuild my core strength and new I’d benefit from the conditioning, strengthening positions that a dynamic yoga class would take me through. I love the flow of yoga and the wonderful feeling of being stretched and becoming more flexible. Conveniently there are classes local to me that I can just drop in to. So on a good day, when I’m not totally unorganised or exhausted, I can turn up to an evening class.
Having worked in a gym for many years (in the sales, marketing, management side of things!), I do enjoy being in a gym and weight training. So having lost the majority of the baby weight last year, with a slight glitch from October to Jan, I’m now back on it and keen to build strength. I also want to work on my abdominal separation (Diastasis Recti) and i’ll be sharing some specific exercises taught by two of the Bramley Road girls, with some post baby exercise tips and short videos on the blog very soon.
So i’ve joined the local gym, the countdown to our summer holiday has begun and the bikini fear is real! Lets do it!
